We need you…

1 June 2021

In order to for us to maintain the group and to continue to provide quality Scouting, we now ask the parents of all new joiners to get involved with Scouting in some way. This could be a Section Assistant helping out with a meeting a month through to a Assistant Section Leader on a weekly basis. If being directly involved with our young people is not for you then we have lots of behind the scenes roles to fill too. When reaching the top of our wanting to join list, we will be in touch with the roles we currently require.

For those worried about getting involved, one of our Beavers parents has put together this short testimony about their experience as a volunteer with the group.

When my eldest son started Beavers, I was worried. I had not been involved in scouting or Girl Guides when I was younger and did not really know what to expect. Luckily when he joined, I wasn’t told I had to volunteer as it probably would’ve put me off if I’m being honest!

It was daunting leaving him with strangers but very quickly the group became friends. Family Camp was the best thing we took part in. It was a chance to see the Leaders with the children, and for them to get to know us parents. It also was an eye opener as to what activities the children do and how much effort the Leaders put in. Even more when you know they are all volunteers!

After my eldest moved up to Cubs and my middle son started Beavers, I felt a stronger connection to the Group and knew how important the act of the volunteers were to the running of it. As I had children at different sections as well as a younger child I could not offer to volunteer as a Helper. However, I put my name down for the odd walk round the woods. I also offered to help as a Fundraiser. Even though it was a back-office role, I knew how important gaining extra funds was for
the group. We arranged a successful Bag packing at Asda and had other ideas in the pipeline but then Covid hit. This made a huge impact on the group and Fundraising hit a stalemate.

By this time, I had been involved in a few executive meetings and knew I could use my skills from my ‘real life’ to take up the role as Treasurer. I still fundraise when I can and the Leaders all support and help too.

As a parent to a new Beaver, I know the thought of volunteering is daunting, but the children all have an amazing time and gain so much by going. In order for this to continue, it needs us parents to support the Leaders and help in any little you can
